Yesterday, Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order directing the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to collect and report information on the cost of providing health care to illegal aliens at Texas public hospitals for inpatient and emergency care.
Today, we issued a letter thanking Governor Abbott for this action. Illegal aliens are an enormous burden on our health care system, but good data is very hard to obtain. According to a 2023 Federation for American Immigration Reform study, states spend about $18.6B annually on health care for illegal aliens, but this study does not include detailed state-by-state data.
Last May, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law with a similar provision for all hospitals in the State of Florida. This is a great first step towards transparency for taxpayers. Citizens have a right to know the cost of illegal immigration to our state.
