U.S. District Judge Ramon E. Reyes Jr. dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit against New York City’s sanctuary city policies. The Trump administration argued that federal law preempts NYC’s prohibition on honoring ICE detainers or sharing information with ICE.

Socialist New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated the left-wing victory, pledging that New York will continue to defend illegal aliens. He deceptively framed the suit as an attempt to “force New York City to carry out ICE’s cruel agenda.”

Judge Reyes found that the administration lacked standing to pursue the lawsuit because striking down the city’s laws would not overturn the policy, since state laws already mandated the same policies. He also argued that even if the federal government did have standing, the 10th Amendment’s anti-commandeering doctrine protects sanctuary city policies.

The 10th Amendment is supposed to protect states from direct legislative mandates or conscription of state officers. However, applying 10th Amendment protections to the sanctuary city issue is a grave error.

Sanctuary city policies do not block the federal government from forcing states or cities to enforce federal immigration law. Rather, they use state and local authorities to actively obstruct federal law enforcement. This is a situation where certain states are forcing the federal government to comply with their open borders policy, not federal overreach.

Open-borders ideologues like Zohran Mamdani, who see illegal immigration as a positive good, will always claim that states and cities are entitled to become sanctuary jurisdictions. Judge Reyes’ ruling shows that Open Borders ideology is not just political rhetoric, but also tangible policy that affects millions of Americans.

This position fundamentally contradicts the rule of law and must be rejected by the American people. The Trump administration filed many other similar lawsuits against sanctuary cities, with an escalating pattern of left-wing courts dismissing them. Hopefully the Supreme Court will make the right decision and overturn these pro-crime rulings.

Texans for Strong Borders commends the administration for challenging these egregious sanctuary city policies. Illegal aliens have no right to be present in the United States, and left-wing activists have no right to help facilitate their presence here. The Trump administration must continue to follow through on these challenges and see these sanctuary policies struck down.
