U.S. Federal District Judge Sparkle Spooknanan issued a ruling on June 22nd against the Department of Homeland Security and its Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) verification system. The judge ruled that changes made in 2025 violated the Privacy and Social Security Acts.
The SAVE system is designed to verify immigration and citizenship status for federal benefits and entitlements, but the Trump administration has used executive orders to expand it. It is now used by states to verify voter rolls and Social Security records, identifying people listed who are not citizens. These changes were made in connection with DOGE shortly after Trump took office, and helped identify major Social Security fraud and noncitizens on voter rolls.
Judge Spooknanan’s ruling argued that using this system to verify whether people voting and receiving checks from the government are actually citizens is a violation of Americans’ privacy and voting rights. This is not surprising, considering that the lawsuit against the SAVE System was brought by the woke leftist organizations Democracy Forward and League of Women Voters.
This ruling, while presented as a safeguard of Americans’ rights, is fundamentally a part of the left’s war on election integrity and border security. The left has been frenzied in their attacks on DOGE, specifically after it revealed mass fraud and corruption in the Federal government being funneled into left-wing causes and foreign nationals. Here they are going after the mechanisms being used to protect America from their attempts to have illegal aliens vote in our elections and receive taxpayer money.
Judge Sparkle Spooknanan is a foreign-born individual from Trinidad and Tobago who currently holds dual citizenship in both the US and her home country. Federal judges are not required to renounce foreign citizenship unless it conflicts with their duties. However, in this case, it appears we have a foreign-born judge using her judicial powers to assist in the invasion of our country. Judges should not be issuing rulings that prevent the law from being enforced or create loopholes allowing illegal aliens to vote.
If illegal aliens and any other noncitizens can vote in our elections with impunity, then we have lost our country and our democracy. People with an allegiance to other countries should not hold positions of authority in our government and then use that power to empower foreign nationals against us. The Trump administration stated it will continue to defend the SAVE system and President Trump’s election integrity efforts, and hopefully, this ruling will be appealed and overturned.
