Strong Borders Newsletter 3/28/25 – Why Do Illegal Aliens Get In-State Tuition?

Strong Borders Joins Coalition Calling for Repealing In-State Tuition Subsidies for Illegal Aliens

Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, along with Texans for Strong Borders and other groups, sent a letter to Chairman Terry Wilson of the Texas House Committee on Higher Education requesting an end to taxpayer-funded subsidies for illegals, including in-state tuition.

The letter summarizes the history of Texas offering in-state tuition to illegal aliens since 2001. The number of illegal aliens enrolled in Texas institutions of higher learning in Texas has grown to 56,000, costing taxpayers $459 million annually.

This practice hurts Texans by privileging illegal aliens, who cannot work in the U.S. legally, over citizens who have the potential to become a valuable asset to our state’s economy.

In the 2025 March primary, over 87% of Republican voters supported ending all subsidies and public services for illegal aliens. In September 2024, a similar poll was taken that showed 72% of voters (as a whole) oppose taxpayer subsidies for illegal aliens. This issue is in the 2024 Republican Party of Texas Platform and is an 89th Session RPT Legislative Priority.

The letter concluded by stating that many Texans cannot afford college for their children and struggle to afford their homes, property taxes, and countless other expenses. Texans for Fiscal Responsibility President Andrew McVeigh encouraged the committee to put Texas students and families first by swiftly passing legislation that would repeal in-state tuition for illegal aliens.

There are currently several bills in the Texas Legislature aimed at addressing this issue, including SB 1798 by Mayes Middleton and Charles Schwertner and HB 160 by Terri Leo-Wilson.

Texas Man Dies After Intoxicated Illegal Aliens Cause Fiery Car Crash

Last week, a 22-year-old man was killed in a fiery car crash in Arlington when three intoxicated illegal aliens ran him off the road.

All three were arrested. The driver, 25-year-old Cesar Ramirez Castro, was charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter and one count of collision involving death. The other two passengers were charged with public intoxication. All three have an immigration hold.

Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare expressed his gratitude for Tarrant County partnering with ICE to remove these aliens from the U.S. So many counties refuse to work with ICE and choose to release these dangerous illegal aliens and criminals back onto the streets.

Judge O’Hare said, “There is a young resident of Tarrant County who is dead because of our failed border policies. This is yet another example of a porous border causing another untimely death.”

The two passengers have been turned over to ICE and the driver is still being held in county jail with an ICE detainer placed on him.

Judge O’Hare congratulates Tarrant County for prioritizing “law and order by assisting in the enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws.”

Judge O’Hare fully supports President Trump’s efforts to secure the border and does not believe it should be a partisan issue. People are dying needlessly because this country was doing nothing to defend its citizens.
