Strong Borders Newsletter 10/4/24

On Wednesday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) “does not have the funds” necessary to perform the agency’s duties through the end of hurricane season. The New York Post reports that the FEMA has spent more than $1.4 billion since Fall 2022 responding to the invasion at our southern border.

In September, Hurricane Helene wrought incredible devastation, not only along the Florida Gulf Coast but much further inland, especially in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, where flooding has washed out several major highways in and out of the area.

Perhaps no statement from the Biden-Harris Administration so perfectly encapsulates its America Last ethic like this one. While Americans struggle to secure supplies and funding, with estimates on highway restoration ranging as far as 12 months out, the federal government is spending our emergency funding on illegal aliens who have come into the United States as a direct result of Biden-Harris Open Borders policies.

In response, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed the BARRIER Act, which would “cut off federal funding to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), non-profits, and other entities that help migrants illegally enter the U.S. or give assistance to migrants unlawfully residing here.” Reps. Randy Weber and Troy Nehls of Texas are cosponsors of this legislation.

On Monday, the Texas House Committee on State Affairs held a hearing on securing the Texas border. The committee heard from a variety of invited witnesses including Texas Border Czar Mike Banks and DPS Director Steve McCraw.

Predictably, Democrats on the committee used this platform to hammer home national Democrat campaign talking points about the so-called “Bipartisan Border Bill,” the Lankford-Schumer Bill we helped organize grassroots opposition to earlier this year.

Contrary to their claims, this Democrat-led bill would not help to achieve acceptable levels at the border and offered unnecessary policy concessions in return for expedited removal triggers that could (and indeed were, after the bill failed in the U.S. Senate) be achieved via Executive Order.

By contrast, the Secure the Border Act of 2023, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last year, would have actually been efficacious in securing the border, as we outlined upon its passage. This bill has gone nowhere in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Despite their rhetoric, the Democrat pivot on the campaign trail is a naked attempt to run from the disastrous record of the Biden-Harris administration on the border. These politicians know that border security and immigration are at the forefront of voters’ minds as they enter the polls in the aftermath of up to 20 million illegal and ineligible aliens entering the United States in a single presidential term.
