A bill authored by U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) that aims to permanently codify President Trump’s border policies has cleared a major legislative hurdle. The Permanent Trump Secure Border Act (H.R. 9773) has advanced out of the House Judiciary Committee, where Republicans prevailed in a 16-14 party-line vote. 

The bill’s key provisions would:

  • End “catch and release”, requiring most illegal aliens apprehended at the border to be detained or promptly returned while their cases are processed, rather than released into the U.S. interior
  • Criminalize visa overstays with increased penalties
  • Tighten asylum rules, raising the eligibility standards and limiting humanitarian parole and other forms of release
  • Codify expanded physical barriers for the border wall, increased detention capacity, stricter interior enforcement, and other Trump-era measures

The Permanent Trump Secure Border Act aims to solidify President Trump’s current border and immigration policies into law in order to protect the nation from another disaster like the Biden border invasion. While many of President Trump’s policies are invaluable and historic, they are unfortunately very reversible. A Democrat president in 2028 could easily open the border back up and invite more migrant caravans to invade.

If Congressman Chip Roy’s bill passes, the open borders establishment would need to use majorities in both houses, overcome the filibuster, and control the White House in order to open up the borders in the same way they did during the Biden administration. That’s a significantly greater challenge than simply having a president direct federal agencies to stop deportations and let the migrant caravans in.

Predictably, Democrats went berserk over the bill. Politico’s hit piece detailed how Democrats see the bill as cruel and inhumane, and their demands for ICE agents to be banned from protecting their identity with face masks. What Politico neglected to mention is that ICE agents only began wearing masks due to left-wing terrorists repeatedly threatening to murder them and their families. 

While getting the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act out of committee is a big step, an uphill battle remains. Many bills get killed in committee because committee processes allow congressmen to advance or inhibit legislation largely without public visibility or going on the record on the House or Senate floor. This allows them to take stances that they know their constituents would disapprove of, because there will be no risk of blowback. 

Now that the bill is out of committee, we, the grassroots, have a stronger hand. It still must pass the House and the Senate before going to President Trump’s desk, but the American people can pressure their representatives and senators to vote for the bill. Passing the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act would be instrumental in safeguarding the nation from open borders interests. Now that President Trump is in office and Republicans hold slim majorities in Congress, there is a limited window to give Americans the strong border legislation we deserve. Republicans must pass this bill, or America will face more waves of illegal alien invaders the moment an Open Borders president enters the White House.
