There is a growing screwworm outbreak in Central America that is endangering livestock and wildlife. This outbreak underscores the need to increase border security to keep it away from Texas. Should the outbreak make it to Texas ranches, it would be detrimental to the Texas economy, costing billions of dollars in losses.
State Representative Ryan Guillen sent a letter to Governor Abbott urging him to include border security measures aimed at preventing the New World Screwworm from entering our nation on the special session agenda. He urges the governor to ensure that Texas has “legal authority and operational readiness to detect, prevent, and respond swiftly to any potential incursion.”
As the screwworm outbreak rages just south of our border, we must take the initiative to ensure it does not wreak havoc on our ranching, farming, hunting, and tourism industries.
National security and sovereignty over our borders are so important. Open borders do not just allow criminals into our nation, but also disease, parasites, and sickness. Texans for Strong Borders hopes Governor Abbott will listen to Rep. Guillen and take action to increase surveillance and border security, protecting our livestock, our food supply, and our economy.
