Texas almost became home to a new Muslim university. The “Texas American Muslim University” (TexAM) has been ordered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to cease operating and has been sued by Texas A&M University.
The “university” presented itself as an Islamic-centered institution offering STEM programs alongside Islamic studies. However, TexasAM never received a Certificate of Authority from the State of Texas to grant degrees. This means that if they had started teaching students and awarding them degrees, it would be a violation of state law. They also did not list any accreditation on their website.
Richardson Mayor Amir Omar praised TexAM and expressed desire for a second campus, while Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened to prosecute them if they began illegally offering degrees. TexAM’s founder, Shahid A. Bajwa, claimed the school to be a legal nonprofit seeking the necessary accreditations and authorizations.
TexAM’s problems do not end with the state government, however. The Texas A&M University System has filed a lawsuit against TexAM and sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding a name change on the basis of trademark infringement.
Despite all these challenges, it is still possible for this “university” to become a legitimate school. Texas Muslims have already shown their ability to bend the law to their will in the Epic City controversy.
The striking thing about this controversy and EPIC city is that these are immigrants who came into our country through our legal immigration system. Unlike illegal aliens, who are deportable under U.S. law for simply entering illegally or for overstaying a visa, legal immigrants and temporary visa holders are much more difficult to remove. Increasingly, they have come in numbers that are impossible to assimilate or deal with, and have completely transformed large swaths of our major metropolitan areas.
Texans for Strong Borders stands resolutely against mass migration, legal or illegal. America belongs to the American people, not foreign nations wanting to absorb and control us. The Strong Border Priorities are a roadmap to stopping the invasion and reclaiming our sovereignty.
