Texans for Strong Borders Calls on the Texas Legislature to Pass HB 3612 by State Rep. Toth to End Birthright Citizenship in Texas
Houston, TX, March 8th, 2023 β Today, State Rep. Steve Toth (R-The Woodlands) filed House Bill 3612. If passed, this legislation ends the practice of granting citizenship to the children of illegal aliens born in the state of Texas simply because they were born on American soil. Concisely, birthright citizenship is not in the constitution, nor is it in the 14th Amendment as its proponents may claim. The United States is one of only thirty-three countries that awards citizenship to individuals simply for being born without any further qualifications.
In January, Texans for Strong Borders laid out a list of nine legislative priorities, which included Ending Birthright Citizenship. HB 3612 would not only satisfy this priority but would be an innovative solution to the ongoing crisis at the Texas Border by removing one of the major incentives that drives illegal immigration to our state.
Texans for Strong Borders President Chris Russo issued the following statement:
“Nobody should have the right to citizenship in a nation purely because their birth took place within the geographical boundaries of that nation. All Texans should commend Steve Toth for his willingness to fight against the long-held yet unfounded interpretation of the Constitution that made Birthright Citizenship permissible in the United States in the first place with the intent of restoring constitutionality in Texas first and foremost, and in due time, throughout the land.β
Russo further added:
βThe only Birthright Citizenship enshrined in the Constitution is for the children of U.S. citizens. H.B. 3612 acknowledges this reality, and would be a good start towards establishing a new precedent nationwide. Earning citizenship to one country or another is a privilege, not a right, and should be based on one’s heritage, merit, ability to contribute to our national interests, culture, propensity to assimilate, and nationality, among other requisites.β
